Skydiving Cost Breakdown

The cost to skydive depends on the type of skydive you’re doing and the dropzone of choice – for first timers, a skydive typically costs anywhere from $200 to $400. A tandem skydive at Skydive Paraclete XP starts at $209, which is pretty standard for skydiving in North Carolina. Here is the breakdown of everything that is included with the price of a tandem skydive:

  • 20-minute instructional class (basic freefall and canopy skills)
  • 1 skydive harnessed to a professional Tandem Instructor
  • 45 to 60 seconds of mind-blowing freefall from 13,500 feet
  • Peaceful 5 to 7 minute parachute ride from 5,500 feet
  • A customized first jump certificate, logbook and access to discounts

BUT … this isn’t all that your dollars go toward …

Skydiving Equipment

You know that parachute you’re relying on to save your life? Those cost around several thousand dollars. And we don’t just jump with one parachute, there’s the back-up reserve parachute that is even more costly and needs particular, recurring maintenance that can only be performed by FAA-certified parachute riggers.

Then, there’s the container (the backpack-looking thingy) that the parachutes are packed into. Not to mention the additional safety equipment that is within the parachute system, such as the amazing AAD (Automatic Activation Device). The AAD is designed to operate on a pressure sensor that automatically deploys our parachutes for us if we’re still in freefall by a certain height and have, for some reason, not deployed our parachute. An essential expense …

Professional Instruction

It may come as a surprise to some that your skydiving instructor is a highly-trained and experienced professional. As a proud member of the USPA (United States Parachute Association), we only employ USPA-qualified instructors. This means all of our instructors must have completed a minimum of 500 jumps, received a USPA D-license, completed a series of training jumps, plus aced an exam in order to become qualified. They’ve spent a good chunk of time, energy, and change on becoming a skydiving instructor, and they should be compensated fairly.

Aircraft & Upkeep

Finally, there’s the most obvious expense: the aircraft. Our aircraft fleet includes an Otter, a Pac750, a Caravan, and a CASA212. All of these are high-quality skydiving airplanes that are regularly maintained on a strict schedule per the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). And don’t forget about the rising fuel costs that airplanes demand in order to get you to altitude!

Is Skydiving as a Hobby Expensive?

As with any hobby, the cost of skydiving can vary depending on frequency and level of commitment. While the initial investment for a tandem jump might seem steep, as you get more involved the costs tend to level out. Once you’re a fully fledged, experienced skydiver, the price per jump ticket is as low as $25 at Skydive Paraclete XP.

That said, skydiving as a hobby can become expensive over time, especially for those pursuing advanced certifications or investing in gear. Yet, for many enthusiasts, the sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie of the skydiving community make it a rewarding investment. So, while it might stretch your wallet a bit, the experiences and friendships forged in the skies often make it all worthwhile.

Cheap Skydiving: Don’t Skimp on Quality!

It’s true, there are cheaper skydives elsewhere. The thing with skydiving is – and most other things in life – you get what you pay for. The airplane type along with many other details, from the facilities to the quality of service, all play a huge role in the cost of skydiving. Which is why the cheapest skydiving isn’t necessarily the best skydiving.

Price should be one of your criteria when researching the ideal dropzone for your skydive. A cheap tandem skydive could mean un- or under-qualified instructors, run down facilities, worn out gear, and airplanes that are not properly maintained. None of these are conducive to a great first time skydiving experience. Here’s the bottom line: if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. When a culture of safety is critical, don’t mess around.

Is Skydiving Worth the Hype?

As skydiving enthusiasts, we can’t help but gush about the experience. Many first-timers and professional skydivers often describe it as nothing short of life-changing. Picture this: you’re standing at the open door of a plane, the wind rushing past you as you prepare to take the leap. Then you’re in exhilarating freefall, flying through the sky at speeds around 120 mph – it’s an adrenaline rush like no other. And when you finally touch down, the overwhelming sense of accomplishment and euphoria is simply indescribable.

So, is all the buzz around skydiving warranted? Well, that really depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re someone who craves adventure and loves pushing your limits, then skydiving might be the perfect fit. Sure, there’s a cost involved, but for many, the memories made and the personal growth experienced far outweigh any monetary investment.
